Department of Indian Languages and Literary Studies 

The Department of Indian Languages and Literary Studies, initially established in 1961 as the Department of Modern Indian Languages and Literary Studies, offers master's programs in Bengali, Comparative Indian Literature, and Tamil. Additionally, it provides Certificate, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma courses in 11 Indian languages.

 Its research programs in Comparative Indian Literature, Folklore, and Indian Languages and Literature have attracted significant attention from scholars nationally and internationally, producing numerous accomplished academics over the years. 


The master's programme in Comparative Indian Literature is renowned for its distinctive design and crucial relevance in India's diverse linguistic and cultural landscape.

 The department actively participates in initiatives supported by the ongoing UGC DRS assistance, focusing on Comparative Indian Literature, Translation Studies, and Indian Folklore and Tribal lore. It has organised several national seminars on these key areas and plans to publish related volumes soon.

 The department proudly celebrated its Golden Jubilee during the 2010-2011 academic year.
